This week one local grocery store was offering 4oz tuna steaks for a mere $2.00. They’re trimmed and fresh frozen, making them a good value. Since I haven’t had tuna in a very long time, I bought several portions.
All I need now is a good marinade and a hot grill. Both I have. But as to the former, I wanted something new. Something spicy and savory, easy and full of flavor.
Here’s what I came up with.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, chopped
- 2 Tbsp reduced sodium (aka light) soy sauce
- Juice of 1 fresh lemon
- 1/4 Tsp dry mustard
- 1/4 Tsp paprika
- 1/4 Tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/4 Tsp (2 to 3 shots) Frank’s hot sauce, or your favorite hot sauce
- 1/2 Tsp ground pepper
- 4-6 4oz tuna steaks
Preparation:
- Combine first nine ingredients in a bowl. Whisk to blend well.
- Rinse tuna in cold water and pat dry.
- Place tuna in shallow bowl, cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour (or more).
- Heat grill to medium high.
- Grill tuna on one side for 4-5 minutes.
- Turn and grill for another 4-6 minutes.*
- Serve with lemon wedges (and tartar sauce for the timid).
*Cook to medium rare; center should be pink. Internal temperature should be 125 degrees. Do not overcook as the tuna can lose its flavor
